This Privacy Policy explains how Backpacking Bible (“Backpacking Bible”, “we”, “our” or “us”) handles Personal Information (information that relates to an identified or identifiable individual) when you visit our travel blog at backpackingbible.com (the “Website”) or contact us.
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the date at the top of this page, and if a change is significant we will make it clear on the Website.
Backpacking Bible is a trading name of Wanderbyte Solutions Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 13463546). Registered office: 12 Forge Drive, Claygate, Esher, KT10 0HR.
Wanderbyte Solutions Ltd is the data controller for the Personal Information described in this policy. This means it decides how and why that information is used, and it is responsible for it under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (“UK GDPR”), the Data Protection Act 2018 and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (“PECR”).
We collect only what we need to run the Website and to reply when you contact us. We do not sell Personal Information, and we do not ask you to create an account.
Such as:
Your email address, your name if you give it, and the contents of your message.
How we collect it:
When you email us at hello@backpackingbible.com or otherwise get in touch.
Such as:
An online identifier stored in a cookie, your browser type and version, operating system, device type, language, approximate location (derived from your IP address), the page that referred you, and how you use the Website (pages visited, time spent, links clicked).
How we collect it:
Through Google Analytics, which only loads after you accept performance cookies in our cookie banner.
Such as:
Your IP address, the page requested, the date and time, and your browser's user agent.
How we collect it:
Automatically, by our hosting provider whenever a page is delivered to your browser.
We set one essential cookie to remember your cookie choice. Analytics cookies are only set if you accept them, and you can change your mind at any time using ‘Cookie settings’ at the bottom of any page. Our Cookie Policy lists each cookie and what it does.
Some links on the Website are affiliate links to partners such as Hostelworld, GetYourGuide and Booking.com. If you click one, you leave our Website, and the partner (or the affiliate network that runs the programme, such as Partnerize, CJ or Awin) may set its own cookies to record that the booking came from us. That company is responsible for any Personal Information it collects, under its own privacy policy.
We receive reports of clicks, bookings and commission from these partners. The reports do not identify you, and we do not send partners any Personal Information about you. See our Affiliate Disclosure for more.
We use Personal Information for the following purposes, each with the lawful basis stated:
If you email us with a question, request or feedback, we use your email address and message to reply. Lawful basis: our ‘legitimate interests’ in running a useful blog and answering readers.
With your consent, we use analytics to see which guides are read, how readers find us, and where pages could be improved. Lawful basis: ‘consent’, which you give or refuse through the cookie banner and can withdraw at any time. We do not use analytics to build advertising profiles, and Google’s advertising features are switched off.
Our hosting provider’s logs help us diagnose errors and protect the Website from abuse. Lawful basis: our ‘legitimate interests’ in operating a secure and reliable website.
We may disclose information where the law requires it, for example in response to a lawful request from a regulator or the police. Lawful basis: ‘legal obligation’.
We use a small number of service providers who process Personal Information on our behalf and only on our instructions:
• Amazon Web Services — hosts and delivers the Website. Our servers are in the London region, and content is delivered through a worldwide network.
• Google Analytics — measures how the Website is used, only with your consent.
• Microsoft 365 — our email provider, which stores messages you send us.
Some of these providers may process data outside the UK, including in the United States. Where they do, the transfer is protected by the safeguards UK law requires, such as the UK–US data bridge, UK adequacy regulations, or the International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.
• Email correspondence — up to 24 months after our last contact with you, unless we need it longer to deal with a legal matter.
• Analytics data — 14 months, after which Google Analytics deletes it.
• Server and security logs — no longer than 90 days.
Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:
• Ask for a copy of the Personal Information we hold about you.
• Ask us to correct information that is wrong or incomplete.
• Ask us to delete your information.
• Ask us to restrict how we use your information.
• Object to processing we carry out under ‘legitimate interests’.
• Ask for information you gave us to be provided in a portable format.
• Withdraw your consent at any time, where we rely on it. For analytics, choose ‘Cookie settings’ at the bottom of any page.
To exercise any of these rights, email us at hello@backpackingbible.com. We will respond within one month, and there is normally no charge.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first so we can try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk, 0303 123 1113).
