Muang Ngoi is a tiny village an hour upstream from Nong Khiaw on the Nam Ou. There's no bank, electricity is patchy outside the evening hours in some guesthouses, and the main activities are walking, eating, and napping in hammocks. For travellers who want to actually slow down, it's the best stop in northern Laos.

Bungalows line the riverside and the main path through the village. Wi-Fi is patchy and hot water is not guaranteed; pick a place with a hammock and a river view and you'll have what you came for.

Bring cash — there is no ATM in Muang Ngoi. Withdraw what you need in Nong Khiaw or Luang Prabang before you head up.
