Thakhek is a sleepy town on the Mekong, directly across the river from Nakhon Phanom in Thailand. Most travellers come here for one reason — to ride the Thakhek Loop, a 3–4 day motorbike route through some of the most dramatic karst limestone country in Southeast Asia.

The Thakhek Loop

The classic loop is around 450km and takes most riders 3–4 days. Hire a semi-automatic or manual bike from Wang Wang or Mad Monkey in town — automatic scooters are not recommended for the longer climbs and gravel sections.

  • Day 1 — Thakhek to Tha Lang or Nakai, with stops at Tham Pa Fa cave
  • Day 2 — Cross the Nakai Plateau, sleep near Kong Lor
  • Day 3 — Kong Lor Cave boat trip, ride back via Route 13 to Thakhek
  • Spare day — useful for weather, mechanical issues, or extra waterfall stops

Kong Lor Cave

Kong Lor is the highlight of the loop — a 7km navigable river cave you pass through on a longtail boat. It's one of the most genuinely awe-inspiring sights in Laos. Bring a head torch, dry bag, and water shoes.

Getting There

  • Bus from Vientiane — 6 hours, daily VIP and local services
  • Bus from Pakse — 6–8 hours, mostly overnight
  • Cross-border — Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge II from Nakhon Phanom

Loop guesthouses are simple, and most of them look out over water

If you don't want to ride yourself, you can do Kong Lor as a 2-day return trip from Thakhek by minivan — but you'll miss the best parts of the loop.
